Original data study
What does it actually cost to get Part 107 certified?
How this was collected
Part 107 is a single federal credential, so there is no state-by-state fee matrix to compare. Instead this table sets the FAA's own $175 PSI knowledge-test fee, sourced from PSI's own fee page, alongside the current listed price of every named third-party test-prep course on this site (Pilot Institute, UAV Coach, King Schools), each checked directly on the provider's own site and dated. A course is only added once its price is confirmed on the provider's own page; we do not estimate or carry over an old price.

Full data table
| Item | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FAA Part 107 knowledge test (initial or retake) Paid directly to PSI when you schedule your exam. A retake after a fail requires paying the fee again; there is no separate FAA application fee for the certificate itself. | $175 | PSI (FAA's test administration vendor) |
| King Schools Part 107 course Self-paced, roughly 10 to 17 hours of video, lifetime access; refund if you fail within one year of purchase. | $129 | King Schools (checked on their own site) |
| Pilot Institute Part 107 course (current discounted price) Regular price listed at $249. Lifetime access, roughly 15 hours of video, unlimited practice exams, refund of the $175 PSI fee plus course price if you fail your first attempt. | $159 | Pilot Institute (checked on their own site) |
| UAV Coach Drone Pilot Ground School (standalone) Standalone knowledge-test course price; bundles adding flight training or business content run $334 to $499. | $299 | UAV Coach (checked on their own site) |
Limitations
- Course prices are checked periodically, not continuously; a provider can change pricing or run a limited-time discount between checks, so the live price on the provider's own page always governs.
- This table lists the FAA's own $175 knowledge-test fee once even though every candidate pays it regardless of which (if any) course they choose; it is not additive across rows.
- Only three named providers are covered here (Pilot Institute, UAV Coach, King Schools); other paid Part 107 courses exist and are not yet verified against a primary source, so they are omitted rather than estimated.
Update history
- - FAA Part 107 knowledge test (initial or retake) re-verified against PSI (FAA's test administration vendor)
- - King Schools Part 107 course re-verified against King Schools (checked on their own site)
- - Pilot Institute Part 107 course (current discounted price) re-verified against Pilot Institute (checked on their own site)
- - UAV Coach Drone Pilot Ground School (standalone) re-verified against UAV Coach (checked on their own site)
