Airport Operations is Task Area 9 of the Unmanned Aircraft General, Small (UAG) Airman Certification Standards (ACS). It covers how manned aircraft actually behave around an airport, tested from a remote pilot’s perspective: not how to fly a traffic pattern yourself (a small unmanned aircraft system, UAS, does not fly one), but how to read one from the ground so you can predict where manned traffic is going to be and stay out of its way.
The rule underneath everything in this task area
Every other fact in this task area exists to help you comply with one regulation: 14 CFR 107.37, which requires a small UAS to “yield the right of way to all aircraft, airborne vehicles, and launch and reentry vehicles,” giving way and never passing “over, under, or ahead of it unless well clear,” and separately prohibits operating “so close to another aircraft as to create a collision hazard.” This obligation is universal. It does not matter whether the airport has an operating control tower, whether you hold a Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) grant to be in that airspace, or whether you believe you were there first: authorization to occupy a piece of airspace is never permission to get near an aircraft in it.
Reading a traffic pattern from the ground
At a non-towered airport in Class G airspace, 14 CFR 91.126 requires powered fixed-wing aircraft to make all turns to the left when approaching to land unless the airport specifically indicates otherwise (through a segmented circle or other visual signal), which is why the standard traffic pattern is described as “left traffic.” The pattern has five named legs: upwind (parallel to the runway, climbing out after takeoff), crosswind (perpendicular to the runway, connecting upwind to downwind), downwind (parallel to the runway, opposite direction of landing), base (perpendicular to the runway, descending toward final), and final (aligned with the runway, the last leg before touchdown). Hearing a pilot announce one of these legs over the radio (covered in Task Area 6) tells you roughly where they are and where they are headed next, which is the whole reason this task area pairs so closely with radio communication procedures.
Markings, signage, and lighting that tell you what’s happening at an airport
- Runway numbers. A runway is numbered for its approximate magnetic heading rounded to the nearest 10 degrees and divided by 10, so “runway 27” faces roughly 270 degrees magnetic. The same physical runway has two numbers, one for each direction of use.
- Taxiway signage colors. A yellow background with black text is a taxiway location or direction sign. A red background with white text is a mandatory instruction sign, most often marking a runway holding position, a location an aircraft must stop at and receive clearance before crossing.
- The rotating beacon. Alternating white and green flashes mark a lighted land airport, a useful visual cue that an airport is equipped and active for operations after dark, which matters directly if you are flying near it at night or during civil twilight.
- Wind indicators. A windsock, tetrahedron, or wind tee shows current wind direction at a glance, and both manned pilots and you use it to infer which runway is active, since aircraft generally take off and land into the wind.
Towered versus non-towered, and why it changes what you should expect to hear
At a towered airport, air traffic control (ATC) actively separates traffic and issues binding instructions over a dedicated frequency. At a non-towered airport, pilots self-separate entirely by announcing position and intent on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF); nobody is clearing anybody to do anything. Either way, the practical implication for you is the same: the busier and more predictable an airport’s traffic pattern is, the more valuable it is to know what you are looking and listening for before you launch nearby.
Operating near an airport under Part 107
Part 107 imposes no requirement to notify airport management or ATC before a typical visual-line-of-sight flight below 400 feet in Class G airspace, unlike the older recreational-flyer practice of notifying a tower within 5 miles of an airport. If your operation requires a LAANC grant because the airport sits in controlled airspace, that authorization process is itself your coordination with the airspace, not an additional notification step. What Part 107 does still expect of you regardless of airspace class is the same preflight diligence covered in Task Area 10: check current airspace restrictions and Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) for the area before every flight near an airport.

Expect a mix of direct recall (identify a marking, sign, or light from a description) and scenario questions that place you near an airport and ask whether an operation is legal given the traffic pattern, right-of-way rule, or a described radio call.
